The Shed is proud to be home to RePaint Hull & Humber since 2022. The paint we divert from landfill helps the planet, helps get peoples lives back on track and provides an income to support the work of The Shed, turning unwanted material into profit, which in turn provides opportunities for people who are struggling.

We provide a practical solution to improve the environment. With an estimated 50 million litres of paint goes to waste in the UK every year, Community Repaint Hull and Humber is working with residents and businesses from Hull, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire to rescue perfectly usable paint.

Every tin is processed by hand and once ready to use goes to brighten, homes, playgrounds, community facilities, schools and other spaces.

How It Works

We work with households, businesses, decorators, and organisations to rescue leftover, usable paint that would otherwise be thrown away. Every donated tin is carefully checked, processed, and stored by our team before being made available for reuse.

Once processed, the paint is sold back into the community at a low cost, helping to support creative projects, learning environments, and improvements to homes and shared spaces.

We sell full and part-used tins of:

  • Domestic emulsion paints
  • Wood stains
  • Varnishes

All paint is available at £2 per litre, making it an affordable option for:

  • Residents
  • Schools and educational settings
  • Artists and creatives
  • Community groups and voluntary organisations

Buying reused paint not only saves money, but also plays a direct role in reducing environmental impact.

Environmental & Social Impact

Since 2021, Community RePaint Hull & Humber has:

  • Diverted 19,709.35 litres of usable paint from landfill
  • Redistributed 18,824.63litres back into the community
  • Supported 2,050people through individual and group sales

Beyond the numbers, the scheme helps:

  • Reduce pollution and carbon emissions
  • Support community projects and learning spaces
  • Improve local environments at low cost
  • Promote reuse, repair, and circular thinking

Why Donating Paint Matters

  • Over 50 million litres of decorative paint are wasted every year in the UK
  • Paint is a significant source of microplastic pollution in our oceans
  • Around 5,205 tonnes of paint-derived microplastics enter the oceans every day
  • Producing just 5 litres of new paint creates COâ‚‚ comparable to driving 60 miles

By donating or buying reused paint, you are helping conserve resources, cut emissions, and protect the natural environment—while supporting practical, local action.

Part of Something Bigger

Community RePaint Hull & Humber doesn’t work in isolation, based at The Shed, the income generated goes back to support our therapeutic crafting and up-cycling.

Together, we’re showing that waste can become a resource—and that small actions, taken locally, can have a lasting impact.

We would also like to thank the community for generously donating their viable paint. Your support helps us continue our activities while promoting reuse and reducing waste.

Painting The Community

Alderman Kneeshaw Park is located on the Bilton Grange Estate in Hull. The park benefits from a strong Friends Group, made up of a small but dedicated team of volunteers who are committed to improving the park and encouraging greater community involvement.
One of the group’s projects involved preparing a park pavilion for the 2024 summer season. With support from volunteers from Centric plc and paint from our Community RePaint scheme, the pavilion was transformed with a vibrant and eye-catching mural, creating an attractive focal point for visitors and helping to bring the community together.

Through our Community RePaint Scheme, surplus paint has been given a new purpose in homes and gardens across Hull and East Riding. Residents have used the paint to refresh living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, fences, sheds, and garden furniture, helping to brighten and improve their surroundings at a low cost. The scheme reduces waste, and enables families and community groups to carry out decorating projects that might otherwise have been unaffordable.
